In this video, we see a class engaged in a “recap routine” that serves dual purposes: helping all students reorient to the storyline and seamlessly reintegrating those who were absent. Each day, students begin class by turning to a partner and briefly discussing two quesions: “What did we do last class?” and “What did we figure out?” After this paired talk, the teacher randomly selects a student to share with the whole class, and together they revisit key ideas to set them up for where they are headed next. This leverages OpenSciEd’s navigation routine and community norms to make rejoining the class feel like a normal part of the learning process, not a burden.
