The OpenSciEd Discussion Planning Tool is a classroom discussion planning template that supports teachers in preparing and leading science discourse. Designed for use with the OpenSciEd science curriculum, it helps educators identify the type of discussion (initial ideas, building understanding, or consensus), determine student pre-discussion tasks, and set learning goals for what students should figure out. The tool includes a discussion flow planning chart for launching, organizing into discussion “chunks,” and closing with a synthesis of ideas or next questions. With space for teacher prompts, student responses, and visual aids, this lesson planning resource ensures discussions are purposeful, coherent, and promote three-dimensional science learning.
