Intermediate Unit 1
To strengthen the capacity of students in Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties to meet the challenges facing a 21st century citizen.
Intermediate Unit 1 is a regional educational agency that strives to provide educational support to the students, parents, educators, school administrators, and the communities throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
Focus of OpenSciEd Work
As part of its commitment to advancing science education, Intermediate Unit 1 is launching the IU1 STEM Pathways program. This program is designed to support elementary and middle school educators in implementing phenomena-based science instruction aligned with Pennsylvania’s newly adopted STEELS standards. A central focus of IU1 STEM Pathways is the integration of OpenSciEd Instructional Materials and Kits, which provide high-quality, research-based resources that promote student-driven inquiry and deeper understanding of scientific concepts.
IU1 will play a key role in obtaining, distributing, and refurbishing OpenSciEd materials for participating districts, ensuring that teachers have access to the tools they need to deliver engaging and effective science instruction. Through professional development, logistical support, and ongoing collaboration with schools and districts, IU1 is helping to build sustainable systems for high-quality science teaching and learning. This initiative not only supports educators in the classroom but also fosters a broader culture of STEM excellence across the region.
Supporting Equitable Science Instruction
Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1) is committed to advancing equitable science education across the predominantly rural and economically disadvantaged communities of Washington, Fayette, and Greene counties in Pennsylvania. Serving 25 school districts, IU1 recognizes the systemic barriers many schools face—such as limited access to high-quality instructional materials and professional development—especially during major shifts in science education.
The IU1 STEM Pathways program program will support elementary and middle school teachers in implementing phenomena-based instruction aligned with the new PA STEELS standards through the use of OpenSciEd Instructional Materials and Kits. By obtaining, distributing, and refurbishing these kits, IU1 ensures that all students—regardless of zip code—have access to rigorous, standards-aligned science learning experiences. Additionally, IU1 seeks to collaborate with EQT and other local partners to embed community-based connections into the curriculum, making science more relevant and meaningful for students. Through this work, IU1 is helping to close opportunity gaps and foster a more inclusive, future-ready STEM ecosystem.
Supporting School Systems
IU1 will provide initial professional development for all participating teachers and ongoing support and networking for all piloting teachers.
