The Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) serves educators across Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and Northern York counties in south-central Pennsylvania. Our science professional learning empowers educators through evidence-based instructional practices, the 3D-learning framework of the PA STEELS standards, and the implementation of high-quality instructional materials. Through workshops, coaching, and curriculum support, CAIU partners with districts to build the instructional capacity needed to deliver rigorous, student-centered science experiences that align with current standards and research-based best practices.
Focus of OpenSciEd Work
CAIU is dedicated to supporting the successful implementation of OpenSciEd. Our work centers on comprehensive professional learning that goes beyond basic curriculum navigation. We facilitate deep-dive workshops where educators experience OpenSciEd units from the student perspective, helping them master driving question boards, phenomena-based inquiry, and navigating instructional storylines. Beyond initial launch training, we provide ongoing support to help teachers shift their practice toward student-led investigation. We also partner with district leaders on strategic planning for the transition to OpenSciEd, ensuring they have the infrastructure and material management systems necessary for long-term success. By bridging the gap between curriculum adoption and classroom practice, CAIU ensures that educators feel confident and supported in delivering rigorous, NGSS-aligned science instruction that centers on student sensemaking
Supporting Equitable Science Instruction
CAIU believes that every student deserves access to rigorous, meaningful science learning and that OpenSciEd is a powerful vehicle for making that vision a reality. Our professional learning is grounded in the principle that high-quality science instruction is inherently equitable instruction. We support educators in implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) frameworks within the science classroom, ensuring that all learners can participate meaningfully in sensemaking. OpenSciEd’s phenomenon-based, student-driven approach creates natural entry points for diverse learners, and CAIU’s facilitation helps teachers intentionally leverage these features. Professional learning sessions emphasize culturally responsive facilitation and strategies for building classroom environments where all students see themselves as capable scientists. CAIU also works with districts to examine their science programming through an equity lens — identifying barriers to access — and to develop plans that ensure OpenSciEd reaches every student. By building teacher confidence and instructional skill, CAIU ensures the shift to student-centered science learning is sustainable and equitable across classrooms, schools, and districts.
Supporting School Systems
CAIU supports school systems through a systems-thinking approach to professional learning, recognizing that sustainable change requires alignment across administrative leadership, curriculum directors, and classroom teachers rather than isolated workshops. We partner with district leadership teams to create multi-year implementation roadmaps with clear goals for teacher growth and student outcomes, and provide guidance on aligning OpenSciEd implementation with the PA STEELS standards and local assessment systems. CAIU prioritizes building internal district capacity through a tiered support system that meets districts wherever they are in their implementation journey, whether exploring adoption, launching curriculum, or deepening fidelity. We develop teacher leaders, coach instructional coaches, and work with administrators to establish the structures of time, resources, and shared vision that allow OpenSciEd to take root. Our long-term partnerships ensure we remain present and responsive as district needs evolve. Ultimately, CAIU’s goal is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem of professional growth where high-quality science instruction becomes a permanent fixture of each district’s educational culture.
