Where can I find Dimensional Analysis in the OpenSciEd Chemistry units, and how is it addressed?
Students engage with unit conversions throughout the course, in context, starting in C.1 Thermodynamics in Earth’s Systems. The choice was made to use unit conversion terminology as it matches the terminology of the NGSS science and engineering practice, using mathematics and computational thinking and Common Core standards for mathematical practice (NGSS Lead States, 2013; National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School Officers, 2010). Using the same terminology to describe a process across multiple disciplines not only supports student thinking but should provide opportunities for students to make explicit connections between different disciplines.
