What should I know about modifying or changing the order of the Middle School Scope and Sequence?

The Scope and Sequence articulates how each unit builds on what students have developed in other units. Intentional scaffolding of student learning of all three dimensions over the program and making sure the arrangement of learning makes sense to students is central in OpenSciEd. This scaffolding is critical to success in motivating student learning and helping students see science as more connected to their lives.

We want all of our teacher’s and district leaders to feel empowered to use their expertise and creativity in the implementation of our materials! Here’s a few things to consider when modifying our scope and sequence:

  • In the scope and sequence, broken arrows represent ideas that would have been built out in the previous units
  • Because. our 8th grade units often utilize 7th grade math, an earlier shift would require an adjustment of those required prerequisite math concepts
  • To support changes to the scope and sequence, each unit overview contains two sections to help when implementing OpenSciEd in unique sequences:
    • How will I need to modify the unit if taught out of sequence?
    • What mathematics is required to fully access the unit’s learning experiences?
  • Be sure to check your state science website to see if specific guidance for implementing this resource is available.
