How should I attribute the use of OpenSciEd materials?
Attribution Guide – OpenSciEd
Our Middle School Open Educational Resources (OER) curriculum is licensed under CC BY 4.0. Our High School Open Educational Resources (OER) curriculum is released under CC-BY-NC+ License. All OpenSciEd materials are licensed in a manner that provides everyone with free and perpetual permission to engage in the 5R activities non-commercially. The 5R activities are retain, revise, remix, reuse, and redistribute. The OpenSciEd name and logo are trademarked and therefore can not be included in commercial redistribution without a formal agreement.
- Retain – make, own, and control a copy of the resource
- Reuse – use your original, revised, or remixed copy of the resource publicly
- Revise – edit, adapt, and modify your copy of the resource
- Remix – combine your original or revised copy of the resource with other existing material to create something new
- Redistribute – share copies of your original, revised, or remixed copy of the resource with others, non-commercially
Individuals must keep intact and may not modify or remove, any notices, disclaimers, or attributions included in or provided with the Curriculum Materials. In addition, where individuals make the OpenSciEd materials available through a website, mobile app or other digital means, individuals must include a prominent hypertext link back to the OpenSciEd website at www.openscied.org for the webpage where the OpenSciEd materials are made available.
You can use CC-licensed materials as long as you follow the license conditions. One condition of all CC licenses is attribution.
Example attribution with no modifications made:
- “OpenSciEd Instructional Model Graphic 2020” by OpenSciEd is licensed under CC BY 4.0
- Contains (name, title, author, license)
Example attribution with minor modifications made:
- “OpenSciEd Instructional Model Graphic 2020” by OpenSciEd is licensed under CC BY 4.0 / remixed original image with state specific criteria
- Contains (name, title, author, license, modifications made)
Example attribution for derivative work:
- This work “Storyline for English Language Arts”, is a derivative of “OpenSciEd Instructional Model Graphic 2020” by OpenSciEd is licensed under CC BY 4.0. “Storyline for English Language Arts”, is licensed under CC BY 4.0 by ELA Partners
- Contains original (name, title, author, license, modifications made) AND new author and derivative work.
Example attribution for the High School materials:
- This curriculum has been adapted from the OpenSciEd High School Curriculum originally developed and authored by The OpenSciEd Project of the National Center for Civic Innovation. © 2023 NATIONAL CENTER FOR CIVIC INNOVATION. It is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial 4.0 International License (CC-BY-NC) and the License for Commercial Use of Curriculum Materials v1.0 https://openscied.org/commercial-license/. The OpenSciEd High School Science Curriculum is available at: https://openscied.org. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
