How does a Canvas district administrator use the Canvas loader?
For teachers in your district or school to be able to load OpenSciEd units into Canvas, the Canvas administrator will need to go to https://openscied.org/curriculum/canvas-loader-administrator/.
Click Connect to Canvas. You will be redirected to https://ocx.openscied.org/public-canvas-instances/new.
Instructions for creating a Developer Key are linked at the top of the page or they are available at https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Admin-Guide/How-do-I-add-a-developer-API-key-for-an-account/ta-p/259. If you have trouble creating a Developer Key, please reach out to Canvas for support.
Log into your district or school’s Canvas instance as an administrator. Once in Canvas, got to Admin and then Developer Keys. Once there, you will need to create a new Developer Key. Click + Developer Key in the top right.
You will create an API key. Make sure to name the key: OpenSciEd Canvas Loader. The redirect URI is https://ocx.openscied.org/api/canvas-oauth-export-callback.
Once you have created a key in Canvas, go back to the Connect Your Canvas instance page at https://ocx.openscied.org/public-canvas-instances/new.
On the Connect Your Canvas instance page, you will need to provide three pieces of information to approve the OpenSciEd Canvas Loader to work with your district’s or school’s Canvas instance.
- The first piece of information is the URL for your district’s or school’s Canvas instance. This is the URL where you go to log into Canvas.
- The second piece of information is the Client ID located under “Details.” Copy the number that is shown and paste it in the Details field on the Connect Your Canvas instance page.
- The third piece of information is the Client Secret Key, which is located by clicking “Show Key” under Details. Copy the sequence of numbers and letters that appear when you click Show Key and paste the secret key under Client Secret Key (Show key) on the Connect Your Canvas instance page.
Then click the blue “Create/Update Connection to my Canvas Instance” button at the bottom of the page.
This will approve your district’s or school’s Canvas instance so that teachers can load units from openscied.org.
If you need to remove or delete your approval, go to Canvas, log in as an administrator, and either make the Developer Key inactive or delete the Developer Key.
If your district or school has a new Canvas administrator and you want to update or change the Developer Key, go to Canvas, log in as an administrator, and make the necessary changes.
